Design Guide: Indoor Lighting 101
Indoor Lighting is the jewelry of the home and can make or break a design. To help you choose the right lighting for your home, we have created the ultimate lighting guide for you. Let’s dive right in!
First, let’s get through the basics – the types of lighting. There are three types of lighting, ambient, task, and accent.
Ambient:
Ambient lighting is to light up or fill an entire room with light. Light waves bounce off the walls to fill the room and is accomplished by using these fixtures.
- Chandelier
- Ceiling mounted fixture
- Wall-mounted fixture
- Recessed fixtures & down-light
- Track light
- Floor lamp
- Table lamp
Task:
Task lighting is simple to remember because the term is the definition; task lighting sheds light on an area where a task will take place. For example, your desk lamp when working. It is a condensed form of light that can be accomplished with the fixtures below.
- A directional recessed fixture or downlight
- Pendant lighting
- Portable or desk lamp
Accent:
Accent lighting is well, you guessed it, to accent a specific point of interest. This type of lighting is good to use in small spaces to give the illusion of a larger room and can be created with a few different fixtures.
- Track Lighting
- Directional recessed fixture or downlight
- Wall-mounted sconces
